The Ultrasonic diffuser versus the Nebulising diffuser

With an ultrasonic diffuser, the essential oils are mixed with water and used when they are cold. Thus, the mixture generates a mist via the ultrasonic activation, in which the components of the oil are diffused. While with a nebulising diffuser, the  essential oils are subjected to strong pressure in smaller and smaller tubes. When the pressure reaches its peak, it is all released as very fine drops that diffuse into the air in millions of droplets.

The ultrasonic diffuser is used in a decorative purpose to create a mood, while the nebulising diffuser is used in medicine and aromatherapy as it does not damage the molecules in the essential oils.

The Ventilation Diffuser versus the Thermal Diffuser

The ventilation diffuser is a simple technology. The oils are directly propagated by the air flow generated by the given ventilation system. The second, thermal, is a little more elaborate as the oil is heated to then diffuse its particles by evaporation.

Diffusion by ventilation is simple, practical and low cost . It requires a regular maintenance of the diffuser and is reserved for restricted areas. Diffusion via a gentle heat should be performed carefully as an uncontrolled temperature is risky. Its greatest advantage is its silent nature. The essential oil diffusers by soft heat have a temperature control system to preserve the benefits of the essential oils.

In fact, everything depends on the diffuser and the way in which it diffuses the essential oils in a given environment:

The ventilation diffuser does not require the intervention of water as the oils are directly transported to a given space by the air flow generated by the apparatus;
Examples: VENTILIA, NOMALIA

It is the same for the thermal diffuser. The oils are heated, and they evaporate. It is this evaporation that diffuses in the room where the diffuser is placed;
Examples: STONELIA, PLUGLIA

The nebulising diffuser does not require the use of water either. Actually, in this system, the essential oil particles are subjected to a pressure so high that they are pulverised and turn into microdroplets. It is the latter that fill the space.
Examples: DAOLIA, LIBELIA, NEOLIA

Only the ultrasonic diffuser requires the addition of water. When the water and oil mix, the latter remains on the surface while the water is below. The ultrasound then passes through the water to transform it into very small droplets and to expel it. During this expulsion, the water carries the essential oils with it and they are released into the atmosphere.

1. Water and essential oils combined

There are three main advantages:

• The humidification of the air and the consequent lowering of temperature which follows;
• A longer diffusion time as the diffuser consumes less essential oils and will be effective as long as it remains;
• A saving in terms of expenses as it takes 12 times less oil for the same duration when they are mixed with water (compared to their use without any mixture).

The main disadvantage of this type of diffusion is precisely because the oils used are no longer pure. Their effects are therefore mitigated by the water: only 1ml of oil is used in 200 ml of water and the therapeutic effects are just as limited (1/ 200 of the benefit).

1. Pure essential oils (with no addition of water)

The benefits are mainly at the therapeutic level as not only is aromatherapy powerful (all the benefits of the oils used) but it is also fast: it takes very little time to spread the necessary amount of essential oils and to draw all the benefits.

On the other hand, this system is not made for those who are sensitive to the smell as essential oils have the distinction of having a strong and pronounced scent. It is also not suitable for long-term diffusions; the smell is too persistent and the effects overdose (e.g. in a restaurant). The diffusion by nebulising is thus the most effective diffusion in the shortest time. For an olfactory diffusion, 3 to 5 minutes suffice. For therapeutic use, it is advisable to diffuse for 15 minutes, the advantage is the small size of the droplets that will guarantee a suspension in the air for hours.
